We've all heard the old adage "happiness comes from within". And yes ... you can't be happy outside if you're not happy inside ... Right? Well... Sort of...
Happiness is a human condition and can be fleeting ... like the wind or a sunshiny day. So, what can you do to bring more happiness into your life? Meditate? Sure ... We've all been told that, but I am seriously challenged to sit still for 20 -30 minutes a day and clear my mind. My mind races, stomach gurgles and I'm usually obsessing over whatever challenge I'm dealing with that day. I advocate for meditation ...but I can't say from experience that it brings me happiness.
So then, what can you do to bring more happiness into your life? You find your happy place of course!
It's not practical to believe that we can jump on a plane to Bali (my happy place :-) or Paris or Tuscany every time we feel gloomy. Oh, how I've wished for time travel to be not just a Star Trek fantasy. But alas, we must make do with what resources we have available, and thus we need to look at our immediate surroundings, home, yard, barn or secret spot to create a space that uplifts our spirits. And it can be as simple as Feng Shui and a coat of paint!
We tend to laugh about the 'man cave' - the room or basement of the house that boasts of trophies, animal heads, whiskeys, pool tables and large screen tv's. But really now ... these 'man caves' are a healthy place for our testosterone laden partners to surround themselves with the things that make them feel good. Better in the basement than the local corner bar! And I think these guy's guys are on to something.
So...what's good for the goose is good for the gander... Right? I have made my office/personal space a place for my favorite things. A veritable alter of goodies that bring a smile to my face or calm in my heart. I have hung art that is meaningful, prayer flags from Nepal and Bali, photos of my besties, and sweet little reminders of friends, family and my spiritual life. I've created a calm, safe space for me to work and dink around amongst meaningful reminders of the good things and times in my life. I've taken the judgement out of it looking like a designer showcase, and have carefully placed my most cherished memories and momentos in my room full of love and inspiration. Yes...I found my happy place ... and it's inside of me and inside my home.
Try it. And if you don't have a room, try a bookcase or a dresser top to set up your own personalized alter dedicated to your happiness. You may be surprised how a simple reminder of happy times can bring a smile to your face, spring to your step, and connection to yourself and to the Devine.
